good/bad?

Is it good/bad or bad/bad?

I'm watching it right now and I'm thinking bad/bad. It makes no sense, but it's not deliberately surreal, Wood is just really bad at writing and directing. He's not a half bad actor, he should have stayed in front of the camera.

Wood's actually not too bad as an actor, he's sensitive, good-looking and might have had a decent acting career if he'd had more training. And he's also very appealing as Glenda - as much as you may laugh at this movie, Glenda isn't the funny part of it, she has a kind of dignity throughout. Wood's writing however is very confusing, sometimes painfully over-obvious with lots of repetititon and narration, and then suddenly very vague and symbolic. The bits edited in the middle with the scantily clad women are obviously from some other film so he can't be blamed for those, he was probably forced to include them and they have nothing to do with the story of the film. It would be better if they were edited out, although they're quite funny!

The Wood films I've seen have a good-natured batty charm and are oddly poignant at the same time. He can be considered an auteur because he kept coming back to subjects such as the passing of time, of death, of being a misfit and of alienation. And he seemingly loves going on about "modern life" and its consequences.

the problem I see for me is not having any unambiguous criterion to judge upon. if I didn't know of surrealism, if present days weren't so fruitful for building senses into nonsensical stuff, if there were less movies which are by far more pretentious and expensive but a bigger bore than this one, if there wasn't for Tim Burton...then I would give my solid voice for Wood/Davis being as sappy and as ingenious as his movies are. depends which standpoint one finds closer to the truth. an asinine jamboree by all means! (if you feel you have seen it all.)

I'd say it's more great/awful. Watch it for the comedy...

reply

good/bad if you watch it as an art film....and bear in mind that this was quite ballsy for the 50s.

You are still young, give it another try after 10 or 20 years and you will have another opinion of it.

It's what I have noticed through time...as I get older I see the same movies differently.
