Film or Documentary?

This movie seemed more like a documentary than a film.

I actually quite enjoyed it and wondered how people felt about transvestites back in those days. And at least this movie shows it

Transvestites were not even a type known by most of the people living in that time period. Transgender? forgettaboutit.

I know this because my parents were born in 1925 and ... well even in the 70's the world was shocked by David Bowie ... big time. At least people over the age of 30 and even some of the people in their 20's.

That stuff just wasn't discussed in the 50's in regular conversation. Rocky Horror was even slightly ahead of it's time.

TV at that time was not even allowed to show a married couple sharing the same bed. Check out the old I Love Lucy shows and you will see their bedroom shows two single beds.

Couldn't even show Elvis Presley swiveling his hips.

I think that was because of Ed Sullivan, not because of any established TV standards at the time.

I think Mary Kay and Johnny were the first married couple to have a single bed. Ozzie and Harriet is the first married couple we have not lost the video to. And while Ricky and Lucy always had separate beds, Ethel and Fred were shown to sleep in the same bed. Toilets were not visible on TV either until Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock.

These and many other 'no-no's' were part of what was known as the Hayes Code that were brought about in the 1930s. These codes were replaced in November of 1968 by the MPAA with G, M, R and X rating guidelines.
