"Put on your red shoes and dance the blues..." - David Bowie

reply

Yeah would love to have a copy.

I bought an all-zone copy on eBay that had Korean subtitles; the issue was first class.

reply

If you are still interested in a copy of this movie, then e-mail me @ [email protected]

reply

I've not been able to locate a copy. However, Turner Classic Movies aired Genevieve in February and I forgot to Tivo it. So you might want to check the TCM website periodically to see if it's aired again in the future (nothing this March).

reply

Thats funny you mentioned that. I caught the end of it on TCM in February, and also remember seeing this moving along while back(70s or 80s).
I left this message afterwards after seeing the TCM broadcast recently and after searching for a DVD release.

-- update:
Opps, it may have been January I seen it on TCM (might be the same day I posted the first message too).

Suggest you contact the proprietor of the Genevieve web site... Google "genevieve" and "car" and you should be able to find it.

Can't help u with a US release date but if you have a multi region dvdplayer then note that the film is available in the UK (region 2) and is released by RANK film distributors. There's no extras to speak of and its not a budget release i'm afraid but if you checkout some of the UK sites like play.com, bensonsworld or sendit.com you may find it cheaper, or bundled into a set at a more favourable price than amazon.co.uk.

TCM airs this film at 0130 hrs EDT US 12 June 06

Cool. Thanks!

"You're turning violet, Violet!" - Willy Wonka

reply

Watched it yet again (I try to catch it when-ever it is on the tube)last evening on TCM. This has got to be the cutest films I've ever seen. Certainly not a forced sweetness, which today's films can sometimes display. What really adds to the whimsy of the movie is the wonderful Larry Adler score.

reply

I agree. A great film. I did watch and recorded this.
It still brought about tears when Geniveve started to cross the Westminster bridge on its own. I think it did every time for me. There are some good laughs in this film too. During the gong from the clock outside, and when the other couple turned around to help his friend only to find out they were ok when they passed one another.
The Larry Adler score is great with the harmonica and adds a warm feel to the film.

I also was surprise, upon reading the cast list, that the old man near the end, who waxes nostalgia about the vehicle, was in fact Arthur Wontner. He had played Sherlock Holmes in films from the early 1930's. Did not recognize him at all!

reply

It's currently available on DVD, the only hitch is the fact that it's 'Region 2' and won't play on 'Region 1' dvd players and the like. You can check out eBay where the going price is in the are of $25+$10 shipping:

The Carlton R2 version is worth getting - good picture and sound quality and a 25 min documentary with interviews from surviving cast and crew, including Dinah Sheridan. Plus you can find out where the two cars live today!

reply

"Genevieve" will be shown again on Turner Classic Movies September 24th, Sunday night at 10:45 eastern time.

reply

This is the first I've ever heard of this "Region" stuff! I just looked at the back of my brand new DVD player and it's "Region 1", of course. Why do they want to eliminate half (or whatever percentage it is) of the customers for anything on DVD? This sort of stupid incompatibility is why I am always reluctant to move into anything new in electronic media. I think I'll go watch something on VHS!

reply

Most DVd players (bar the Sony ones) can have their region lock disabled, so you can play region 2 discs.Try going to Google and typing in something like '(make and model no of dvd player)region unlock code'. You can do it with region 2 disc players so i cant see any reason why it wont work with region 1.

reply

I have just bought a region 2 DVD on Ebay for US$7.00 including postage, which also included a 25 minute documentary "A Profile Of Genevieve". I first saw this film at the cinema in 1955 and have enjoyed it many times since. Just one point though, neither of the two 'star' cars are eligable for the Brighton run as they are both 1905 models! Qualifying vehicles have to be no later than 1904!
