First film on cable television 1953

According to Boxoffice 11/14/53 Page 21, FOREVER FEMALE was the first film to be offered to the public as a pay TV event. This happened in Palm Springs, CA and was available to 75 to 100 set owners, with coin boxes attached to their TV's. The picture would unscramble when money was inserted and a Telemeter technician would come and collect it once a month. Oddly enough, the film was shown at the same time at the local Plaza Theatre while a separate print was telecast for Telemeter customers. The premier was on Saturday, November 28, 1953. The film was followed by a pro football game (LA Rams vs the Baltimore Colts)....and the rest is history.

That's not the same as cable television. It was what was known in the '50s and '60s as "pay TV," which is quite different from cable.
