Tony Martin

A very good singer, but he has to be one of the worst "actors" ever to grace a movie screen. It's not surprising that his ambitions of becoming a major film star never really panned out.

In every movie I've seen him he pretty much plays himself, or at least a fictionalized version of himself. Given the kinds of movies he made he wasn't that bad. The roles never called for that much acting. Any actor that isn't given challenging roles and who works with directors that don't push them to give a good performance won't be that good.

I'm not saying there aren't bad actors; we know there are. I'm saying there are very few naturals in any field. Actors have to hone their skills just like anyone else. Good actors usually do a lot of acting before we ever see or hear of them. Many of them train and continue studying their craft for years; often throughout their careers. Acting is a job.

Singers and other celebrities who act, like models and sports stars, usually get into acting never having acted before. They're often cast in leading roles because they have a large fan base who will go to see them but on set much less is probably expected of them than from professional actors. They may not get the proper guidance so it shows in their performance. One cannot improve under such conditions. That's my theory.
