Is it me or does Cary Grant look as if he had lost a lot of weight for this film? He looks as if he lost a shirt size is most scenes... around his neck. He looks as if he had been very ill just prior to making the film.
shareI noticed that he was thin in this movie also, but I doubt he was sick. Maybe his busy schedule didn't allow him to eat well.
shareHe had gotten sick while making I was a Male War Bride and you can see he's thinner in his next few films. But you are right, in this one he looks perhaps the worst I've ever seen him. The haircut doesn't help and besides that, the film is unworthy of its two stars.
He announced his retirement after this failed to click, but the thought of working with Hitchcock and Grace Kelly brought him back.

Yes I gather he nearly died during the making of I Was A Male Warbride and shed 20 pounds or more. However that was about 3-4 years before Dream Wife, so it doesn't quite explain it.
The short hair-cut may owe more to the teeny-bobber crew-cut he got for Monkey Business which was right before Dream Wife, so maybe it hadn't grown back yet.
Perhaps it was the mix of the short hair, bow ties, and still some the weight-loss from before that made him look more skinny.
...all that said, this was funnier than I was expecting and I love the chemistry between him and Deborah Kerr!
