I think it deserves mention how great a film this little known effort really is. Very well played, and Burton shows the same great presence that made his career so impressive. Mason's part is small, but he also is great.
I highly recommend it.
This is an above average war picture with unusually good special effects for its day, with these same special effects being pretty convincing even for today, actually, in some cases, better.
I think it was a good idea to shoot this movie in black & white. In doing so, I think it made it better as opposed to filming it in color.
This movie also made me feel more like I was a part of the action, ie, like being one of the soldiers, and made me feel less of a spectator in the viewing audience.
I agree. This is an excellent film. Burton is fantastic, the action is riveting, and the black and white cinematography is gorgeous. The relationships among the men are poignant and moving.
