Pocahontas speaks English before meeting John Smith

How can she be speaking such good English in her first conversation with John Smith? This can't be accurate, can it? I saw this movie on Hulu.

No, it is not accurate that Pocahontas, or any of the Powhatan Indians, knew and spoke English - one of many things this movie got wrong. BUT, this is a movie and the main characters had to be able to talk to each other so that aspect can be overlooked.

Not all the factual errors, etc can be overlooked, but then again a lot of those can be chalked up to the time period in which this movie was made. All in all it was good for a lot of laughs and nothing more, but then again this is coming from someone who knows and loves the real history.

Choose...between yesterday and tomorrow. Pick one and stick with it.

Actually her tribe had encountered Europeans years before John Smith arrived. Actually a cousin of Powhatan (Pocahontas’s father) had been kidnapped by Europeans way before John Smith arrived. This also happened to a few others in her tribe too. Besides Smith isn’t the one that taught her English. She learned it from an English boy that was living in her village. She became so fluent in the language that she came an interrupter for her tribe when she was only about 10 or 11 before her marriage to Kocoum at the age of 12 or 13.
