a country named LICHTENBURG?

That would be a more appropriate name for a city .. LichtenBURG! Wouldn't the screenwriters know this? It should have been called LICHTENSTAD.

Blame it on Lindsay and Crouse, who wrote the libretto.

It's obviously a combination of Lichtenstein and Luxembourg - two very small neighbouring states in central Europe.

Liechtenstein and Luxembourg are indeed small European states but they are not neighboring states. Luxembourg is one of the "Low Countries" along with The Netherlands and Belgium. It is bordered by Germany, Belgium, and France. Liechtenstein is in the Alps between Switzerland and Austria.

Well, the movie is loosely based on real-life Washington hostess Perle Mesta...who became ambassador to Luxembourg. So it's really just a wink to the audience, really.
