shareI do think that Doris Day would have made a marvelous Annie Oakley! I've never liked Betty Hutton in the part; I thought she was much too strident and over-the-top; it is actually difficult for me to watch her in the role.
From what I understand, Doris was one of the actresses briefly considered as Judy Garland's replacement in Annie Get Your Gun, but at that time (1949) she was at the beginning of her film career and wasn't enough of a proven name for such a high-profile part. Pity, because she would have been perfect.
Well, at least we still have the recording Doris made, in the early 1960s, of the Annie Get Your Gun score. Needless to say, she performs it beautifully.
