Actually, in "Another Thin Man" (1939) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031047/, William Powell orders two Bacardi cocktails, but he pronounces Bacardi with first syllable emphasized! I really wondered about that - has Bacardi new on the market and no one knew how to correctly pronounce the name?

In both cases I found it rather intersting that they were ordering those, and wondered if Bacardi as a brand was still considered new or novel such that people would order a Bacardi cocktail rather than a rum and this or a rum and that? What other brands of liquor would be treated similarly?

In any case, in Blueprint For Muder, they order them so often that you would think that Bacardi was paying a lot of money to have their product mentioned so frequently, but, it was probably more that this was "their drink" they shared together.

A "Bacardi" cocktail is a specific drink. It starts out like a Daiquiri, but includes a teaspoon of Grenadine syrup. The finished product has a slightly pink cast, and is a little sweeter than a Daiquiri. It was fashionable to order a Bacardi at one time, and the drink did have to be made with Bacardi rum to be a genuine Bacardi.

But that rum was manufactured in Cuba. After the mess with Cuba started, "Bacardi" began to to be imported from elsewhere, but it did not taste the same as the Cuban Bacardi. Probably owing to this, the Bacardi Cocktail fell out of favor, and other variations on the basic Daiquiri became popular. Transplanted Cubans in Florida made rum of their own, which did not carry the Bacardi label at all, but that rum was delicious, although I do not think it got much publicity. Cubans really know how to make tasty rum!
