I was surprised when she actually admitted to making love to her brother-in-law. By 1953 standards, that was probably more shocking to the initial audience then who actually killed the girl.

I think you have that a bit wrong. :)
The phrase "making love to someone" did not quite mean what it means today (just like the word gay had a different meaning a few decades ago). It meant more wooing or courting someone. Kissing was definitively implied, but not necessarily sex.

In the film Rebecca Maxim de Winter uses the same phrase when he is talking to his fiancé. It was quite a common phrase.
