Am I mistaken or - Spoilers

It's clear Debby wanted to hook up with Bannion but was he in the process of falling for her too? Is that why her character is eliminated?

Obviously Bannion doesn't have the funds Stone has but Debby's impressed enough with him at the club to run after him. Surely she knew she'd be found out. Anything she thinks makes him seem interested, like sitting on the bed or saying he didn't think of her because he didn't know her, makes her happy while any clear rejection of her makes her mad. She wants him to compliment her but gets upset when he says she's just trying to make Vince jealous. She also gets upset and storms out when he said he'd never touch anything of Vince's with a ten foot pool. Later, she takes abuse from Vince but never reveals where he's staying.

While Bannions words say he's not interested in her, his actions say something else entirely. At times, he even looks at her longingly.

He's also quick to trust her, is very attentive towards her, takes care of her, even gives her a gun. At Vince's place, he's surprised she's there. He runs to her when she calls. Seeing she's been shot, he fires the gun at Vince but there's no bullet so he stops. When the guys suggest he killed Mrs. Duncan he says he didn't but doesn't say Debby did it either. He only alludes to her being the killer when the EMT guy says she won't make it.

He acts toward her as if someone he cares about is dying; holding her hand, he tells her about Katie, his wife, and says she'd have gotten along with her. It's odd to put them in the same category but it seems like he's equating them. He says Katie had a wild Irish temper. She'd be upset with him and give him a hard time then he says that's how it must be with most families.

In those days people were more formal in how they addressed each other. The use of first names suggested closeness. At this point, she's calling him Dave and he calls her Debby. Seems odd.

Debbie is eliminated for two reasons: she is scarred, and she is guilty of murder. Had she not died, the audience would have felt bad thinking about her being in prison and scarred for the rest of her life. So, for the sake of a happy ending, she is killed off.

As for Dave Bannion, I think he simply started liking Debbie as a person.
