I dont know why this movie gets such bad reviews.
The photography is breathtaking!
The characters believable and real.
Wonderfully acted by the cast.
You also get to learn something about the Greek culture and about the sponge boats.

This is a great film.
Many of the films today cannot hold to a candle to this public domain beauty.
Hollywood could learn a lesson by some of these "dollar" movies.

Don't fret kimpunkrock, this IS a wonderful movie.. Saw it when it came out as a kid.. Great movies.. wonderful stars. It's just that some of us when we grow up turn into 'a..holes'.
There's a whole lot of 'maroons' in this world.

I now own three different DVDs of this movie (none of which were issued by 20th Century Fox, damn'em), but they all look like crap. I recently purchased a DVD of Soldier of Fortune and Garden of Evil (two other Fox films from the mid-1950s, both issued by Fox, thank God), and they look great.

Why are there so many crappy DVDs of this movie on the market? What the heck are the idiots at Fox thinking when they turn their backs on a fine movie like this?

Its better than I thought it would be. I'm from Sarasota and have visited Tarpon Springs a couple of times to see the sponge docks and have a Greek salad. I didn't realize the animosity between the Greeks and Conchs, if it really did exist. Those two places are hundreds of miles apart. But its still a good story anyway.
