Cyd Charisse lip syncing?

I read she was in the deleted Two-Face Woman so I assume she was in the other numbers in which her character sang. If true, did she ever sing in a movie?

reply

I don't believe Cyd Charisse ever did her own singing in any movie, though I can't absolutely swear to this. In THE BAND WAGON her singing voice was dubbed by India Adams.

reply

Just looked around. Even in The Silencers she was dubbed by ... Vicki Carr.

She did do the musical Grand Hotel on Broadway for a little while towards the end of its run, so she must have done her own singing there.

I think she did some and doubed most. But she wasn't a singer.

I think this thread is regarding her screen career and I don't think Charisse ever did her own singing in a movie.

I brought up Grand Hotel only to indicate that Charisse must have had at least a tiny bit of vocal ability. Stage performances rarely employ ghost singers.

Although she did Grand Hotel, that was the first time audiences ever heard her singing voice, In films her singing was always dubbed by either India Adams or Carol Ritchards

Do you know which one sang for her in IT'S AWLAYS FAIR WEATHER? I know India Adams sang for her in THE BAND WAGON and SILK STOCKINGS.

The suggestion that she probably sang on stage in Grand Hotel is really interesting. One of her obituaries said that she was virtually tone deaf, so God knows how she managed before a live audience.

reply

She did her own singing in the 1986 London revival musical recording entitled: "Charlie Girl". In my opinion, I can hear why her singing was dubbed, but who cares, she was wonderful the way she was.

reply

The term should be dubbing. Lip syncing is misleading because in a musical film everyone lip syncs, even if it is to their own voice.

Ms. Charisse appeared on TV in several variety shows. Should one assume she did her own singing?

She was most likely dancing on them, not singing.

Cyd Charisse starred also in other stage musicals: "Illya Darling" (1968) as Illya on tour (1968), "Can-Can" (1969), the 1972 Melbourne production of "No, No, Nanette" (1972) and the 1981 Ohio production of "Greenwich Village Scandals (Follies) of 1923". To my knowledge only the 1986 London revival of "Charlie Girl" is on CD.
