Not really film noir

This movie could have been better. It's on a set called
"Bad Girls of Film Noir" yet I don't see any real bad girls in it. No femme fatales. You are waiting for Lizabeth Scott to do something awful and she never does. The movie actually bored me while I waited for it to turn into film noir. It never did.

This movie is just plain Bad. Heston is either too casual or too intense--influenced by Kirk Douglas perhaps--and Lizabeth Scott is miscast. The story is depressing and completely predictable. Yuck.

Agree with both of you. This is such a predictable, cardboard cut-out copy of earlier, better films. I specifically mention "The Citadel," a 1938 film starring Robert Donat and Rosalind Russell, which had the same mixture of mining town, doctor on his way up, his being torn between the miners and the lure of a rich practice, and so on, in fact it feels like a bad remake with at best a mediocre script and direction.

Don't feel cheated. It would have bored you just as much had you not been waiting for it to turn to a noir.

A femme fatal is not required for it to be film noir. Determining whether a movie is film noir is more than just a matter of checking off boxes.
