Episodes available at Netflix but show seems very dated now

I rented several episodes and was no longer enchanted with the show. It was a childhood favorite of mine and I wanted to be Angela Cartwright because she had such pretty clothes. But many years later, I could barely get through the episodes because they just weren't that good. I saw Danny's character as loud and verbally abusive, and the thought of smelling his cigar all the time made me want to gag. He was always raising his voice to his wife and children. It was meant to be funny but I don't find it so now.

"Make Room for Daddy" was produced and aired during TV's infancy. The writers and directors were working with what made people laugh. The words "Child abuse, domestic violence, equality, subservance, submission, independence, dual-incomes, no smoking please, active listening, involved parenting, respect" were not in the vocabulary of the 1950's population. Society has evolved so much since then now that were are in the 21st century. We know what is age-appropriate, acceptable and politically correct now. Back then our grandparents generation didn't.

Last time I checked, we still don't have most of those things some 50 years later. Now, I'm no expert of 1950's television, but Child Abuse, BTW, was indeed a subject on several non-comedy discussion programs in the 1950's that children weren't allowed to watch. The only surviving episode of "Okay, Mother", an early 1950's program often called "A tribute to motherhood", featured a debate on spanking that got pretty heated.

Oh, my God... don't they have bottoms in Australia?

Of course it's dated! It's 50 years ago! If you watch it with today's mentality, then you can't appreciate that it was a different world view in those days. I don't find Danny to be verbally abusive, I find that people had much thicker skin.

I think the show is hysterical. One of the funniest shows of the 50s. I could do without all of the lame musical numbers though. To me, that's the one thing that really drags the show down.

I always loved MAKE ROOM because it reminded me of my own family: a lot of yelling, arguing, smart-ass kids, strange relatives dropping in, and music.

This is exactly why I have never watched the show. I can't stand that loud mouth of his and all that you said.
