Reception now and then

I've read that public laughed while watching El and reception in Mexico was financially bad.
I wonder what part did they find to be funny? Was it his constant questioning? Shooting scene? Maybe they have seen Golden age and they've noticed similarities to the garden scene? :D

It's good to see on a spanish language review of this film - high rating of 8.4

I loved this film, looking for Bunuels trademarks is funny in itself - feet fetish, interrupted dinner, candelabrums...
My favorites are sudden pistol shooting scene, (I trust that was shocking moment on big screen to see), starting scene in the church and final scene from church also.

I find Francisco's reaction to bad lawyers somewhat disturbing. His reaction is.. a kinda modern. I don't remember films in those times showed a person to get upset so that he must lay down on a bed and we keep see his agony over not so important thing. It's silly but I always thought that people in '50s didn't have such human emotions, because of movies from that time, they never showed it in that way. I always thought that people started to be drama queens in the 60s, after sexual revolution and influence of media :D
