One of the great musicals

I say with no hesitation as a former film reviewer and one who has seen literally tens of thousands of movies in my life, WITH A SONG IN MY HEART is one of the best musicals ever made. Jane Froman, forgotten today, had an incredible voice, and Susan Hayward, unknown to anyone under 30, transcended the awkwardness of most musical bios and became the person she was portraying. We can argue all night about what the greatest musical is (my vote is with SINGIN' IN THE RAIN). But there is no doubt that HEART belongs right up there with the best of them, and is unquestionably the best of the musical bios.

As a friend and fan of the late, great, Jane Froman, I agree with you that WITH A SONG IN MY HEART is one of the best musicals ever made. How wonderful it is that through publicity and the Jane Froman Centennial which will be held in Columbia, MO On Nov. 9, 10 and 11 of this year, some new generations will be exposed the Ms. Froman's and Ms. Hayward's talents, but 20th Century Fox is remastering and finally putting "Song" on DVD to be released to coincide with the Centennial.

Thanks for paying tribute to someone I loved over 50 years ago, and whose memory I revere today.

In addition, my vote goes to a movie released in 1945 called A SONG TO REMEMBER, which was the life of Chopin. It starred Cornel Wilde as Chopin and Merle Obron as George Sands. For that period of time it was the most beautiful movie with pianist, the late Oscar Levante actually playing Chopin's music to Cornel Wilde's fingering. They don't make 'em like that any more.

I agree. Great musical. Throughly enjoyed it!

I wanted to like this, but I found the musical numbers boring, except for a few, but Jane Froman's voice was wonderful. The cast was great, but there was something missing for me.

I understand why this movie is well loved. I understand Jane Froman liked Susan Hayward. I even believe Hayward to be a great actress. Maybe it is because I'm from a different generation but it bothers me when singing is dubbed. So, I am with you. When a movie is mostly musical numbers....cast a singer in the lead. That's what was missing for me. I wouldn't call this a bad movie but I have a hard time blocking that issue out of my brain.

You can't fault Susan Hayward in her performances in scenes where she was on stage. Even though she was lip syncing Hayward still comanded the stage and was enthusiastic in every number.

You are right, she is a good actress, good enough to pull off the role. But I still stand by my opinion. There are singers and actresses and actresses that are singers and actresses acting like singers. ;)

It was the norm for decades whenever the person portrayed in a biographical movie is still a famous singing star for the original celebrity's singing voice to be used and in 1952 Jane Froman was still a popular singer. It's only been since the 1980's that they will usually have the star to sing for themselves. I'm actually of the opposite opinion of yours; it's kind of distracting to see someone playing a famous singer but we aren't hearing that famous singing voice. Sissy Spacek proved to be a very good singer but in no way does she sound like Loretta Lynn and it's throws the movie off a bit for those of us who know the Loretta Lynn sound; the star's story in a way becomes a generic star story.

It is a beautiful musical. :)
