Badly written, acted, and directed.

John Ford and James Cagney should have been embarrassed to be part of this flop. Cagney gives perhaps the worst performance of his career.

Cagney tried hard, had some fine scenes, like the one with Marisa Pavan at the end, and when he realizes that "I may be drunk, but I know I'll go." Mostly, Cagney is miscast in a part that Had John Wayne written all over it. Quirk could have been played by Forrest Tucker or a few years later by Lee Marvin.
