Questions about reviews

I am puzzled by remarks in two IMDb reviews here. One reviewer refers to David Wayne as "playing the title character" when the title character was obviously Nellie, his wife. Another refers to the movie being shot in black and white, and I recall vivid color. One scene involved a smudge of bright red lipstick. What do the rest of you recall? I seem to remember bright flags and bunting in a Fourth of July scene as well.

Nellie doesn't stick around long, and the story is told mostly from Ben's point of view. The movie was indeed shot in color. The smudge of bright red lipstick was left on Ed's face when he and Nellie kissed at the party. When the movie opens, Ben is an old man reminiscing about his years in Sevillinois. It was the 4th of July, when the town would have been decorated with flags and bunting.

The movie was definitely in color!! I remember it well! David Wayne is the lead character, not the title character. However, Jean Peters as Nellie is essentially a strong supporting role.

This is a late response to this post but I wonder if there was another movie where David Wayne was a barber which was a drama. It was set in the late 1800's. He was always making decisions for the both of them, I know that was widely practiced then, but he would always tell the other party to not tell his wife about it. She found out about all of his decisions. She got fed up with all of this and left him and went to Chicago where she died in a street car accident. I always felt sorry for the way he treated her. Am I thinking of a different movie?
