It's actually a wonderful film--every bit the equal of Kazan and Brando's later collaboration "On the Waterfront". There's no "Speedy Gonzalez" ethnic stereotyping--on the contrary, the film treats the Mexican people with great dignity. (Having an Anglo actor play the great Mexican revolutionary may be a bit of a problem. But then again, Brando played a German a few years later in "The Young Lions"...and in that film he did use a phoney accent!)
It's fascinating to watch Kazan working out his feelings toward Communism in the evil character played by Joseph Wiseman. Kazan also shows how readily the revolutionary, having overthrown the oppressor, becomes the oppressor himself. Indeed, one of Zapata's associates delivers an incredible meditation on the use of violence to effect social change. Having seized power by violence, will not the revolutionary use violence to retain power, and thus become as oppressive as the former regime? (In other words: Meet the new boss, same as the old boss).
The film actually has a deep link with "On the Waterfront" if one reads them both in connection with Kazan's testifying against Hollywood communists. "On the Waterfront" makes the point that informing is sometimes the appropriate thing to do; "Viva Zapata" makes the point that revolutionary movements sometimes become so evil that they deserve to be informed against. (Let's not forget that the people Kazan informed on were sympathetic to Stalin, who murdered tens of millions of people in the name of the Revolution).
The film is readily available on ebay in a Chinese DVD. For some bizarre reason, the print lacks the opening and closing credits. (Maybe they thought that by removing the copyright information, they could obviate the laws?) But even in a slightly mutilated version, it's a joy to have this great film.

I bought this movie on DVD from Amazon-
it was produced in S.Korea, has chapters, subtitles-
what I apparently missed (but I would have bought it anyway) is that
in these Korean productions, it is common to omit the opening credits.
This was not the case with another jewel I found (African Queen) on
Barnes and Noble.
