Brando with a mustache and fake eyelids

This is definitely not one of Marlon Brando’s best, but it’s not his fault. He plays a pretty good Mexican with his mustache and fake eyelids. But the movie is altogether too long and too slow. A very unentertaining story that’s basically the same as Pancho Villa. The only thing different is that his name is Zapata. This movie really offers nothing new. 1.5 action rating

I agree that this film is a solid, well-done look at a man and a people not often portrayed in a sympathetic and intelligent light by the Hollywood of the 40's and 50's. It was actually quite a step forward, even if we might quibble now regarding the casting and the facts portrayed. Brando was still fresh and exciting here, Quinn solid and Jean Peters proved herself a good actress against some much-lauded co-stars. Kazan, Steinbeck and Brando make quite a team here!

I thought Brando was superb in this and admire his choice of roles to play that defied being cast as a pretty boy, which could have so easily happened to him.

Actually Zapata was mixed race, mestizo, like most Mexicans.

I think the acting is superb and shot composition among Kazan's finest. It's a great film. Quinn and Brando are two of the best ever on screen, and many other performances are exceptional, especially Joseph Wiseman's.
