Fernando: "I'm a friend to no one and to nothing except logic"

An interesting piece of dialogue from an intriguing character. I'm still trying to figure out his motivations for doing what he did.

He was certainly ruthless, that much is absolute.

So why did he switch sides? Corrupted by his drive for personal gain and power? Vindictiveness?

Any ideas?
