How did the FBI get on to the woman with the books?


How did the FBI know to follow the contact with the books?

You're right that it's not made clear, but I think we can assume that she was a known operative, or, at least, a person of interest, to the FBI. Given that New York was her working patch as courier, and the discovery of the car likely placed Fields in the same city, it would be a fair assumption on the FBI's part that tailing her might lead them to him.

I'm wondering if there is a brief bit of footage edited out because some guy in a bow tie we only see once gives the microfilm to this lady at the post box on the street corner. Who the hell is he? Did the 1st spy with glasses give it to him? I guess but we don't know for sure.
