Maybe it's not theft as much as a quote. Herrmann quoted Shostakovich's 3rd string quartet for the Psycho theme. And by quoted, I mean it's the 3rd movement but in a different key.

It happens all the time. I'm assuming because a lot of films are cut to a temporary score, usually something classical, and then the final score is composed, likely with the director insisting that the composer give them something similar.

Point taken. I will have to agree to some degree with your observation. I guess that the average person wouldn't notice as much as I did - so I'll concede it's fair game to use snippets that could have been influenced by a director. :)
