Lots of Robin Hood movies have been transfered to DVD. Is a release for this film planed?

It has just been released as a Disney Movie Club exclusive, so you have to either join their club to get it, or wait for someone to sell one on Ebay in a couple of months. I hate these releases because they're harder to get and also they have no "extras" on them.

reply

I dont understand why you have to join the club for just one movie. I think that is really dumb.

reply

I agree. That's Disney for you. Other releases they have done that with include "Horse Without a Head" and "A Tiger Walks". I keep up with this stuff at www.ultimatedisney.com

Has anyone heard any updates on this movie coming out on dvd yet?

Thank you. I did the same thing also and still nothing. This is nuts. I haven't seen this movie in years and I want to see it again.

Hi , I grew up with this film, great childhood memories, I have it on vhs and have now copied it to a DVD, if you would like a copy I will be happy to send you one, it depends if you live in England or Europe and can play it , anyway let me know on a private message. I love the Elton Hayes songs too. byeee.

I've got it from Channel 4 Freeview digital TV (last year) straight to HDD stunning, Nay,
perfect screen (restored?), chaptered'n'all, and minus commercials - no wobbly, fuzzy VHS here.
And Sorry Mike, I've just been busy/lazy. But you should have waited, mine's at least ten times better!
I spent hours and hours redoing the menu with your poster - there's a lot of trial and error involved,
and each new version has to be 'burned' again. You'll throw yours away...! NOW features Elton Hayes
singing the title theme (audio) on the menu!

I've just looked back to where this thread picked up again (re the Disney Movie Club exclusive DVD
release) and have had a look at http://www.ultimatedisney.com/storyofrobinhood.html. Well as I said,
I recorded the film from Freeview digital TV almost exactly a year ago (Channel 4), and I was very
impressed by the perfect, bright-as-a-button colour picture. Seriously up there with "The Adventures
of Robin Hood" remaster -as shown on TV- I thought. But then I use Sony's Freeview box which has
very strong colour, and is apparently still the best currently on the market (although it has no 'slot';
and no 'off' button on the unit itself, encouraging the so-called "stand-by culture" so frowned upon
these days). And yes I have it fed straight into my PC. Anyway, according to the DVD review it is
no better than the 1992 Laserdisc and isn't even chaptered (unlike mine).

Previously available only through membership of the Disney Club (US only).

No extras, it would seem (compare to "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" and "Pollyanna" US editions). And if it's the same as the Disney Club edition, then not even any chapter stops! I could do a better job myself... and now that I have two recordings from separate UK Channel 4 broadcasts, with different commercial breaks, I am now able to blend the two seamlessly!

It is not available on DVD to the best of my knowledge but you can get it as a BitTorrent file. You won't get the extras or a nice case and graphics but I saw this wonderful movie when I was a little kid and loved it! There was an ambiance, a mood and a darkness to the scenes where Robin & his men capture the Sheriff and send him back to Nottingham facing backwards off his horse. You could almost reach out and touch the atmosphere to the movie. Know what I mean? It was done "back in the day" in the 1950's when you went to the local movie house and they wafted the smell of hay & horses as you watched a Roy Rogers flick... it lent a mood to your enjoyment of the movie that you can't capture anymore. It was WONDERFUL! I will never forget it...

Others that definately need the DVD treatment are the two RH films from Hammer Films: Sword of Sherwood Forest and A Challange for Robin Hood. I've never actually seen them but they've got to be top notch. Just about everything i've seen from HF's has been top notch and the former was directed by Terrance Fisher who also directed most of the classics from Hammer. I finally watched SRHHMM two nights ago on VHS and was pleasantly suprised by it considering I just recently heard of it. I could just be biased because I've always been a huge fan of the character mostly from growing up with Prince of Thieves, Men in Tights and the 70s animated disney version. I was also facinated how similar SRHHMM and the later disney version were. They both had the singing guy with the banjo and Robin and crew infiltrating the castle at the end with a similar escape by Robin, swimming with arrows flying at him and all. Even thought I saw this as an adult, these similarities gave me a dose of nostalgia while viewing it which enhanced my entertainment. I'm betting disney hasn't put this out on DVD yet because of the similarities which is a real shame because it would make a good companion to the later version.

I was in a Movie Trading Company store yesterday (7/25/09), and discovered that this movie has just been put on DVD. This is my favorite "Robin Hood" movie, and it really made my day!

It's available now, just watched the copy I bought from Amazon.
