Jarring cutaway scene.

Towards the end, during a dramatic scene between a standing Cotten and Wright as she is seated on a bed, the camera "crosses the line" twice and Wright is suddenly looking in the other direction without Cotten in the scene. The lighting in these two quick takes is garish and doesn't match the rest of the scene, and Wright's clothing is slightly different. My guess is that Cotten wasn't even there and that something had gone wrong with the shoot or audio and Wright was called back for a retake on those few lines. But it's done very poorly and noticeably. The camera could at least have done a closeup on her facing in the same direction.

You're right, definitely shot later. I'm guessing the censors insisted on it. Cotton had just said that the stolen money would give them the security they had "prayed for". The censors might not have wanted to just leave that hanging out there. Wrights line "Stealing can never be the answer to a prayer." fixed it.

I noticed it, too. It's too bad they could not have tried harder to make it a bit closer to surrounding footage.

That seems like the probable explanation.
I think most of the problem is that they tried to do the reshoot in one set-up instead of two. An initial tighter shot of Wright just on the other side of her eyeline would have been fine. (the latter part of the set-up isn't crossing the line because Cotten has moved by then).

I didn't notice it so I bet several other millions didn't either back in '52. Good job, though.

May I ask you at approximately what timing you are referring to this cutaway. Was it the scene in New Orleans?
