IMDB has put out its overlong BS explanation, but it's probably really something to do with money.

I read on this site that MovieChat claims not to be affiliated with IMDb. I’m confused by this because I have come across comments that I posted on the IMDb site years ago. I had not registered for MovieChat when I saw my old posting.

They just archived it all. Or, at least, as much of it as they could. I'm not associated with moviechat, but my understanding is that they figured out a way to get the archives transplanted.
