I'm with you!
Despite the fact that I've never been on a big ship, I'm ready to leave my university now and join the SIU!
My first job will be to do some special haircut in of that very special barbershops...

You wrote this a few years ago, but if you’re still wondering;

First you need to take a basic safety class you’ll need to find a school offering an STCW approved class, this will cost you about 1000$ then you need to get a U.S. Passport (90$) then you need to get a Transportation Workers Identity Credential (TWIC) from the TSA, this will cost you 145$, then go to the web site listed below and download the application for a Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) and the forms for a physical.

Take the form for a physical to an MD, have them fill it out and sign it.
Fill out the application for a MMC, apply for wiper, ordinary seaman and steward.

Get a drug test from an approved provider.

Once you have your TWIC take that and all of your paperwork to a Coast Guard Office Of Marine Licensing And Inspection.
Pay them 140$ (it may have changed)

Once you have your MMC contact the SIU (they have fees too, but I don’t know how much, I’m in a different Maritime Union)

Or you could enroll in one of the maritime academies, but then you would be joining AMO, or MMP or the MEBA
