John Dehner's Nose

Why did they put that fake nose on John Dehner?? He was the first fencing instructor if you didn't recognize him. Does any one know why???

Very good question. It took me a while to recognize him without his moustache or his distinctive voice. I always remember him being billed as "Mister Dehner" on radio's GUNSMOKE when I was growing up. It came as a surprise to learn he had also been Palladin on radio. I used to have the last episode of HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL on an LP and you find out a lot about the character's background. If I remember he came from a wealthy Boston family, and he leaves SF to return home promising to return for Hey Boy and Hey Girl's wedding.

Interesting choice of actors Dehner and Richard Boone to play Palladin, but did they really offer it Randolph Scott for tv?

It was a sly dig at Jose Ferrer's prosthetic nose in CYRANO DE BERGERAC.

Yes, I do. John Dehner as Doutreval of Dijon was the visual and speaking double for the actual fencing master in the scene, Jean Louis Heremans. Dehner and Heremans closely resembled one another, except for profile shots, which necessitated the bump on the nose. Jean Heremans was my father and I have the plaster mask made of his face used to make the cosmetic adjustments to Dehner's profile. Heremans is the fencing master who created all the dueling sequences in the movie.

Ah! Now we see the violence endemic in the system!

Viviane,

Wow, your dad choerographed the famous final duel? I bow to his greatness. Did your father work on other pictures?

Thanks for sharing your personal knowledge with us. I, too, wonder if your father worked on other films...?

He's listed in Miscellaneous Crew (uncredited) for Scaramouche and the link to his impressive film credits can be found there.
