Was this an influence on the STAR WARS saga? - SPOILERS!

I've noticed certain story elements are similar, e.g., the main character being trained by the person that trained the enemy's trainer and the revenge plot that becomes complicated when the character realises that there is a family connection!

Sorry that no one has replied to you so far, but yeah, now that you mention there is that similarity! As well as the notion of rebels fighting an evil regime. Well spotted!
