Melbourne?!

As an Aussie, I have to say the opening sequence, supposedly in Melbourne, was pretty groanworthy. The buildings, the accents, the dialogue of the locals -- there was nothing Australian about any of them.

It doesn't matter, and it didn't spoil the movie; I'm just chuckling at the naivety. (Yeah, I know -- "Bali" didn't look or sound like the real Bali, either.)

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

It was 1952 mind, things were probably very different back then. I thought it was quite accurate, it did Australia way more justice then the Simpsons episode when they visit Australia.

Out of curiosity, are you Australian? Ever been here?

I am English but I am living in Perth at the moment, and I have been to Melbourne, why?

It just surprised me that you would think it was an accurate representation. We've never had architecture like that in Australia, even in the 1800s.

I saw it as accurate compared to how other American movies and tv shows have portrayed Australia. I appreciated the fact that I didn't see any koalas sitting in the theatre or kangaroos in the streets :)

I'm sure they filmed everything in southern California.

Re Bali, keep in mind that they never actually make it to Bali. That's where they're headed after the giant squid encounter, but then they're shipwrecked.
