What? No DVD?

I demand this baby for my collection NOW! It's one of my favorite comedies!

SAY NO TO WINDOWS VISTA

this is avail. on amazon for just a few bucks. I have not seen this, is it a comedy and do they get to go to Mars. love sci-fi even the old ones as long as they get to go to other planets.

reply

RED PLANET MARS is definitely not a comedy, except in an inadvertent sense. And you'll probably find this disappointing, considering what you wrote, but no, they do not go to Mars or any other planet.

It's a cold war film about an American scientist who thinks he's established radio contact with Mars using a device invented by a fugitive Nazi scientist. The messages tell of all the technical wonders on Mars, which in turn cause panic and economic ruin in the West. Meanwhile the Soviets have secretly bankrolled the Nazi, who has built his own transmitter and is eavesdropping on the American's messages. Then, suddenly, just as the West is teetering on the brink of disaster, Mars starts transmitting religious messages that spark a religious revival in the Communist bloc and lead to the overthrow of the Soviet regime and its satellites.

I won't go any further but this is one of the most bizarre (though definitely original) sort-of sci-fi films ever made, touching not only on science fiction but economics, religion, Communism, Nazism and so forth. There are no spaceships, no scenes on other planets, no aliens (at least none that are seen or heard), no monsters, no fantastic gizmos, absolutely nothing that you normally find in a sci-fi film. It's basically an anti-Communist movie with a science fiction gimmick as its hook, plus a heavy dose of religion as a cure for the world's ills.

I've always really liked this movie precisely because it's so different and downright preposterous. And it does have a good cast. Worth seeing, but as I said, if you're only looking for spaceships and aliens and flights to other planets, this is not for you.

By the way, the DVD is put out by a crummy company called Cheezy Flicks, which ruins otherwise okay (or even good) movies by the sophomoric way they treat them. The DVD is okay, but I wish MGM/UA would put out its own, proper, release, as they did on VHS.

reply

This movie deserves to be put out by Cheezy Flicks, it really lives up to that term.

reply

It's the fact that Cheezy Flicks insists on mucking up the film by inserting its own moronic logo into the opening credits that's irksome. I don't much care who puts a film out as long as they leave it alone! I really don't need to see some idiot outfit burn their logos or otherwise screw around with a film on a DVD. I'm paying to get a pristine print of the movie, not see it marred by a bunch of smirking, no-talent clods.

Demand granted.

Sorry, that's the same old Cheezy Flicks DVD.

Better than NOTHING...

reply

True, but it's old news, since it's in the posts above that were written five or more years ago. Anyway, as was also said, that DVD has problems. We need a better one.

reply

Agreed!

reply

Now that the so-called MGM Limited Edition series has more or less resumed, I'm hoping they might issue it on that line. An MOD, but not only better than nothing, better than what we've got!

Or, well, you know...there's always Criterion.... 

For those who may not know, MOD = "Movies On Demand."

reply

Yes. Also called "burned" as opposed to "pressed". Recorded onto disc as requested. Most people are probably familiar with the term. Warner Archives is the premiere example of this technique. The technology has come a very long way and has made available hundreds of older films for which standard releases would be too expensive for not enough return for the studios.

reply

Thanks for the detailed explanation.

I didn't know all of that, and I appreciate the "education" from you.

reply

Oh, well, you're welcome. DVD-R is another term for an MOD. Warner Archives is even doing some MODs on Blu-ray now, the technology has improved so much.

reply

It is at youtube. If you have the right programs to download an oldr movie and convert it you can make your own. Or you could just watch it online at youtube.
