Are the Movie Versions Not Faithful to the Original Books?

I have not yet gotten around to reading the original stories; I do know, however, that Wikipedia says that the movie versions have strayed from Hope's own depiction of Ruritania, which he portrayed as a much darker and tragic place. Is that true?
