Was there a sequel with the Mason character?
James Mason gets away at the end. That seems odd unless there was a
movie sequel or a continuance of the book having Mason's character in
it. Comments?

You're right. There's the sequel novel to the original one, both written by Anthony Hope - The original being THE PRISONER OF ZENDA, and the sequel RUPERT OF HENTZAU.
