My understanding is that he was born Jay Hanna and later changed it to Jerome Herman. Dean was quite a character and perhaps did this just to add a bit of confusion to the public record. He was not a man to take matters very seriously. One story goes that on the same day, he gave interviews to writers from two different newspapers and told one that his real name was Jerome Herman Dean and that he was born in Mississippi, he told the other his name was Jay Hanna Dean and he was born in Arkansas. When the stories were published and the differences became evident, one of the writers confronted Diz asking for an explanation. Dean told the man that each writer had asked for an exclusive, and not wanting to disappoint either, he gave one to each man.

There is also the story about the time he and three of his teammates broke curfew and manager Frankie Frisch fined each of the others $200, but fined Dizzy $400. When Dean complained about the inequity, Frisch explained that as Dizzy was the team's star everything about him had to be bigger and better, fines included. Dean decided that such reasoning made a lot of sense and gladly paid the fine.

Another true story about Dizzy was from early in his career. A sports reporter picked him up in his car and took him to lunch. As they were driving through the city, Dizzy pointed at a gas station and asked the reporter, "How do they know which of these street corners has the gas and oil under them?"
