no one helped each other AT ALL...

They just kept looking at each other as things got worse... Even at the end, Meeker get's it, and they just trudge on to sell the body and have a emotional scene.

The only people who helped each other were the baddie and his lady, and the old dude and the donkey.

Funny times.

I respectfully disagree. (SPOILER ALERT)..At the end the Stewart character has thrown a rope to the Meeker character yelling at him to leave the Ryan character's body there and come in (to save himself from drowning or whatever) but the Meeker character gets hit by the big floating log and dies.

Agree with your point. As to the OP, isn't that the fundamental premise of the film? The characters are only driven to action after considering the financial gain they may make from their collective interventions. Thus we see Anderson hang around and watch Kemp embarrass himself, before offering to rope climb the rock face and "help out". There are a number of similar episodes occurring throughout, only interrupted by the behavioural changes to Kemp and Lina.🐭
