I lift up my finger and I say...

Does anybody know all the words to Mrs. Riley's song "I lift up my finger"?

I lift up my finger and I say
"Tweet tweet, shush shush, now now, come come!"
I don't need to linger when I say
"Tweet tweet, shush shush, now now, come come!"
When the baby screams and scatters my dreams
Do I start to sing or hum?
No! I lift up my finger and I say
"Tweet tweet, shush shush, now now, come come!"

Leslie Sarony's version from the late '20s is even funnier than the one in the movie.

Yeah but that's not the version used in this movie. I recall Mrs. Riley going 'Poor mother Hubbard, what would she do? I'm so broke I don't have a bone to throw at you' and 'do I bang you like a drum?'

reply

Isn't it, "shatters my dreams"?

I LOVE this song and the scene itself is an under-rated gem of a number (gotta love those frowsy chorus girls!).

However...am I the only one who noticed that they're lip-synching and dancing to a playback (rehearsal) recording of Lucan singing?

What I suspect happened was that they filmed the scene with "live" sound as the playback rolled, fully intending to replace it in post-production with a more polished "studio" version -or at least properly dub in the recording used (the sound you're hearing is from the microphone on-set picking up the sound from the play-back speakers -that's why it sounds like they're singing to a recording).

Even the most low-budget, poverty-row musicals from the 30's had better post-production sound that this, so I highly suspect that somebody forgot to re-track the finished song into the film.

Feedback?

I got the same feeling...just didn't mention it because, in all honesty, I feel that a lot of films from that era cheap out. But I do think u r totally on target here.

Bok602 that is such a superb comment.

Until you verbalised it I could not quite figure out what was so odd about that scene.

When I read your post I knew you were right instantly. It made my day!

Every time I see the song now I think of you.

Well done! A very funny - and cinematically erudite - post.
