Fake melodrama about a real woman

Annette Kellerman said about her devoted husband of 60 years James Sullivan "He was a true partner, a real friend and the finest husband a woman ever had".

Hollywood would never tell the truth if a lie was more marketable.

He was an *beep* in this film yikes.

I don't understand you two at all. Sure, this biopic is highly fictionalized, as most biopics go -- but how is Victor Mature's James Sullivan such a bad guy?

Perhaps both of you hail from the Millennial generation and have little understanding of the way people thought (rightly or wrongly) in previous generations?

What's not to understand? "Wet, you're terrific. Dry, you're just a nice girl who ought to settle down and get married" pretty much sums him up. Doesn't help that Victor Mature didn't exactly have much acting range.

The film Sullivan is an unsupportive partner, jealous of her success (after getting her into the racket in the first place), and a bit of a cad. The real-life Sullivan was the opposite. It makes sense that some people might prefer something a bit less cliched.

And did you really think making blanket insults about the OP and first commenter's assumed ages would improve your argument?
