Loud

This is the loudest 'quiet' movie I've ever watched. Julie Harris was certainly effective as Frankie and the angst of a pre-teen. But the screech! I wish she had taken it down a notch. IMO it would have given the performance more impact.

There's a difference between acting on stage and acting in film. With a camera on you there's a nuance that can be provided that can't on stage, where projection is everything.

The veteran director should have instructed Miss Harris to "dial it down." Her performance seems to be intended for the last row of the balcony, fine for a live theater engagement but not desirable for a film performance. That remains one of the film's drawbacks.

Surprised your post hasn't started an online lynch mob, but I completely agree. The part is incredibly shrill to begin with, but the scenery-chewing here is like nothing I've seen outside of "Lion In Winter". Wow. Just finished watching and that performance is still going off in my head like a car alarm.

That is a perfect metaphor.
