Who did she really love- Calvero or the Musician?

reply

Thereza loved Calvero...and spent almost all of her energy trying to pursuade him of that, to no avail. Calvero, being the martyr, didn't want to play second fiddle to a young up and coming ballerina, so he rebuffed Thereza's advances. It embarrassed him to be called ridiculous for being with her, so that is why he pushed her away. There was one scene where Thereza cried on her knees to Calvero that she really loved him and would do anything for him...and he replied, "I know you would." He knew he had a lot of control over her fragile existence, and it scared him because he didn't have much control over his own.

The musician was an infatuation...but Calvero was her true love.

i think she loved them both - calvero and the musician, neville, just in different ways. terry owed her life to calvero. they shared the same fears and realities. he forced her to face life again. neville was different - her love for him was more of a fantasy. calvero was real and so was her love for him. i think calvero loved her just as much, but was too jaded and too cynical to believe he could have such a pure unconditional love at that stage in his life. he knew how she depended on him and just as he forced her to walk again, he had to force her to be independent from him when he left her. i also think there was an underlying respect between neville and calvero. this movie was one of chaplin's finest and it really was a bit of a tribute to his relationship with his fourth and final wife, oona, who was quite a bit younger than him.
ultimately, i think terry's love was for calvero.

I definitely think she loves calvero, more than everything
And calvero loves her too much to pretend a young raising star to spend the best part of her life with (and for) an old and almost forgotten sad and drunk actor.
A really deep love history, but there is something more: the artist at the end his career, when nobody calls him, when his art has turned old… He was over 60 when he wrote the history, and surely knew very well this feeling of “last chance” at every show.
From the point of view of an artist it's very touching

Calvero. I believe she really did love him. But, being that he was old and probably knew was dying, he couldn't give a loving relationship with her. Calvero said she'd be more happy with Neville than with him. It shows at the end. The way this movie ended was right on. Basically, the theme was to move on and pass the torch to a younger genre. Calvero dies, Terry's a success. Most likely, she does end up with Neville. But she will never forget the love, understanding and the interest that Calvero showed for her.

I think Terry didn't love neither of them. Terry didn't know to love, Terry knew to dedicate her life, loving someone is desire, for Theresa everything was not ethical, not desire.

I believe both because she had the infatuation with the musician before ever meeting Calvero. For the musician there was a love that grew over time and for Calvero there was a love that was stemmed from a realization of the fragilty of life. She loved them both in two very different ways but in the end they were the same thing. My hope is that she ends up with the musician.

I think she really loved Calvero... and wouldn't want to love anyone else untill he died... the young man loved her very very much... and one got the feeling that after she got over Calvaro's death she would learn to love the young man.... and yes Calvaro loved her, he was in allot of pain because he realized how much he could hurt her... and he also didn't feel like he deserved her love.

It is interesting to read the many different opinions on this great movie. It seemed to me that Calvero loved Terry as a daughter. She loved him also. She saw him as a protector who could take care of her, but she was confused about her feelings for him. She was in romantic love with Neville. Calvero realized this. He left so that she and Neville could be together. However, she confused her relationship with Calvero with true love, and would not go with Neville.

Well put, Michigan. Terry loved Calvero, but she didn't love him the way a wife should love her husband. Terry didn't realize that (at least, not consciously). Calvero, on the other hand, was wise enough to know it and to resist the temptation that Terry offered.

She would always love Calvero, but had been drawn to Neville at one time and he loved her so much she could come to love him.

People call this autobiographical movie but Chaplin would have taken advantage of her vulnerability. He loved young pussy.
