Funny to hear them complain about the heat and walk around in suits.

Even the retired policeman had a warm jacket on in the middle of the hot Mexican day.

"It's the system, Lara. People will be different after the Revolution."

I love these films but that is one thing that bothers me. I guess that's how they really dressed back then. Always a suit. Reminds me of Dick Powell rowing the boat with his suit on in "Pitfall".

reply

It shouldn't bother you. That's how people dressed back then, even in the summer.

"Who's running this airline?!"

Watching this now and I said the same thing, suits in the heat ! In the old days, even the crooks and killers all wore suits and hats. Love it !

reply

Yeah, those were the days when people still had class.

This standard didn't come to an abrupt halt either. It was still present throughout the 1960's, and gradually went out of fashion when the WWII generation faded away. Wasn't really completely gone until the 90's. Best barometer I have is the transition among car salesmen and airline passengers. They were the last hold outs. Now it's pretty much down to attorneys and funerals.

Top hats went away much more abruptly in the mid-60's. Eventually replaced with the ball cap.

Maybe because those scenes were shot at the Catalina Island Isthmus where it can be cool and the actors wanted to dress warm. Although, Teresa wasn't dressed warm even at night. I spent a couple of days at that location.

___It's an oxymoron, but that's how it was back in the day. They even wore suits to a hot baseball game, check out old photos. Baseball great Joe DiMaggio, married to sex kitten Marilyn Monroe almost never dressed down, relaxed. Reminds me of another old movie, The Hitchiker made in the early, or mid 50's. Three guys are driving in a hot no a/c car in the desert. One, the hitchhiker, nee bad guy, wears a hit leather jacket, and the only thing they want to drink is hot coffee, crazy.
