This movie is incredibly underrated

I found it thoroughly entertaining and fun to watch. Elizabeth Taylor never looked more beautiful. This film really should be considered a classic, maybe not quite up to the level of Errol Flynn's Robin Hood, but certainly not forgotten about. I really think it's held up well over time.

I agree. It is a wonderful film back when people knew how to make em right.

Of course. you're right. Elizabeth Taylor never looked lovelier, but for me she is matched all the way in looks by Joan Fontaine. Whether they are matched as actors, though, is another matter.

Upon seeing this, I thought exactly the same thing: why is this film not better known? It holds up very well and is engaging thrroughout. Elizabeth Taylor is enthralling and the characterization is very well done. I also thought that though it does not match Robin Hood, it compares well to it as opposed so many other medieval theme movies of those days, and should be considered a classic.

The writing is different than Flynn's Robin Hood. Much less merry. Darker. I love Robin Hood, but I'm very impressed that they didn't ham up the dialogue in Ivanhoe. Moodier lighting. No tights!

I agree 200%.

Great movie.

One of the great period adventures. Excellent script, performances, costumes, terrific action in the jousting and siege scenes, and splendid music from Rosza. Never been beaten!

I really agree as well. The film really surprised me, even though the action sequences were a little weak. I don't know if I would put it up with Robin Hood, but it certainly held its own. Robert Taylor was great and this was one Elizabeth Taylor's better supporting roles. She may have looked a little prettier in Giant or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but she was very beautiful in this as well. One question I had though, was the anti-semitism in the original book as big of a role as it was in the film?

reply

It is and always will be a very good movie. It was made a long time ago and holds up very well. One of my favorites.

Just watched this, I thought the rating would be like 8.0, but 6.8??? But I just read the book so it was probably more fun to watch.

Just watched it on TCM as part of their tribute to Joan Fontaine - agreed! Excellent film. While a bit dated in parts (like every film of the genre at the time), the acting is strong, the story is good, Rosza's score is excellent, and there's some truly spectacular action.

TCM is running Ivanhoe and Knights of the Round Table back to back today. Very enjoyable.
