No African-American faces in crowd scenes?
I looked closely throughout the entire movie for any African-Americans in the crowd scenes (staged or shot on-location) and simply could not find any.

How do you know? Did you ask what continent each extra was from?

I did sixty in five minutes once...
Then TGSOE is historically accurate then, because I never saw one black person at the circus when I was a kid.

The OP is wrong. I just watched the film over the weekend. There is an outdoor shot maybe 25 minutes in where three or four black kids and an adult are watching a clown (I think). Also, I noticed a black couple in the audience during one of the big top scenes. And I'm a middle-aged black male who went to the Ringling Bros. circus twice in the early 60s.
"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"
I didn't see any either but the scene where they put up the tent, there are almost all blacks.
Given the era, I'm assuming that perhaps that races were still segregated at circuses like everywhere else.
I don't think there were a lot of Asians in the Midwest.
Liberals - always counting colors.
shareI spent 6 weeks examining every frame of this film seeking a black person in the audience shots. To my horror I found none. It disgusts me that this movie is allowed to exist.
shareI went to the circus once, years ago, can't remember seeing a black person there, either. Guess we need to outlaw circuses, too. Also, went to a small Baptist church once to hear a marvelous black gospel singer of our aquaintance. Didn't see a single white face there. . . Mark 'em down for -- removal, too, eh?

Even worse -- the only black faces we saw in Gone With The Wind were slaves. Need to shut that one down, too -- and I mean RIGHT NOW!
shareYou won't find much representation of modern sensibilities in most Hollywood fare prior to the 1960's (with some exceptions.) Anyone who's "horrified" that black actors and extras aren't prominent in this picture (or even present at all) would do best to avoid 95% of all movies made before circa 1955; they might develop medical problems or even suddenly collapse dead on a steady diet of the cinematic absence of (or present but demeaningly portrayed) people of color!
shareThat looney Tune who wants the movie banned because of the absence of black faces in the audience is nuttier than that Catholic guy who complained about the costumes of Hutton and Wilde in 1951. He was from the Legion of Decency or something.

That looney Tune who wants the movie bannedYou don`t suppose he was joking, do you? Follow the clue: "I examined every frame…" Obviously satirical.

No I don't think he was joking. He probably hasn't even one funny bone in his whole family tree! I have read some awful nonsense about this movie, but that takes the biscuit.

I strongly promote destroying any movie made before "The Graduate". Excluding "Deadlier Than The Male" of course.
Correct, unless Sidney Poitier was in the movie.

DOn't blame the filmmakers. Had they included blacks in the crowd scene, most theaters in the South would have boycotted the film.
shareBut as I said before ... I went to the circus every year when I was a kid and never saw one black face in the whole audience in all that time, so it looks like the film got it right!

Aside from being another example of the "politically correct" on patrol again, this thread is useless.
The crowd scenes were, no doubt, shot on location with the circus. And, aside from plants (real actors) peppered in for close-ups and single-line comments, nobody auditioned to sit there. I doubt any expense or time was wasted on rejecting black folks who may have wanted to join the crowd. (DeMille wanted blacks to buy tickets, too.) Therefore, the scenes were shot where there was a scarcity of blacks to begin with (like my old neighborhood in a Chicago suburb), not due to some nefarious plot (the politically correct crowd see those in my aunt Edna's fish bowl) to exclude black circus lovers from joining in the fun.
Well said cwente2. I doubt DeMille would have shouted "Stop filming, I just saw a black face in row 2!" during the production. Did the audience have to pay an entrance fee during those filmed sequences ... or were they let in free?

Better be careful. You're getting dangerously close to tweaking the noses of the PC's first cousins -- the "TP" (thought police)!
shareThis movie is disgusting. My life has been destroyed by watching it. I didn't see a single Latino. Or Korean. Or Pacific Islander. No Tierra Del Fuegoans either. Not a single transgendered person, either! No amputees....no developmentally challenged people either. No Eskimos. No morbidly obese people. And no Cocker Spaniels, who originated from Spain - so this horrible movie is prejudiced against Spaniards too.
I'm definitely going to sue Paramount for mental and emotional stress, as well as any living descendants of Cecil B. DeMille, The Ringling Brothers/Barnum and Bailey organization, and the Technicolor corporation. This movie has damaged me to the point that I can no longer work and I must now go on government assistance as well.
Now I must look for other hideous, racist movies to vent my moral outrage upon and view for any potential lawsuits. Minorities must be avenged!
no morbidly obese? the 'fat boy' was a touch shall we say calorifically challenged , hey ! did he eat all the minorities? lol
shareOMG! The Humanity! We should be properly outraged!
C.B. De Mille should have had his basketball team taken away from him.
Any African American that watched this movie should be given cash reparations.
Whites who watched this film should be required to attend sensitivity training.
Dorothy Lamour says "you mean we have to wear blackface?" at the beginning of the movie. If she was still alive she should have be forced to grovel at the feet of the Reverends "baby daddy" Jackson and Sharpton.
Like the McCarthyism of that era, our society brands anyone that doesn't enthusiastically worship at the altar of "diversity" to be only one step up from a child molester.
Dorothy Lamour objected to wearing blackface make-up because its sticky and messy. YOU are implying she's in the friggin' KKK!

So would you rewrite history to be happier? I don't know how many were shown on the Titanic or Lusitania. The list is endless.
shareI could say the same thing with Naked Prey with Cornel Wilde. The blacks outnumbered the whites 100-1 in the movie and I loved it. It is just BS that anyone would spend 6 weeks looking for something to just hate. In fact I felt for the other black tribes being taking as slaves by other blacks and minorities. It is just a movie for the masses. You can either enjoy it or complain to high Heaven because of biases. Allowed to exist? It does exist, period.
shareGod so true!! And so ridiculous!!! Maybe someone should start counting caucasians at black shows or at church services down south. My god people...you are ridiculous.
It is 2015!!! I would have hoped that by now we would stop counting blacks, Asians, religions, ages, sizes, etc etc etc etc......geezuz!!!
Well....with all the interracial coupling...soon we will all finally be one race!!!!!!!!!!!! What will people count and complain about then? How many couples are black and white, white and Asian, Asian and black...etc etc etc....?????
Yeah, I hate Sullivan's Travels because before they bring the chain gang in, there are only black faces in the church.
shareNo, we point out the lack of colors, which were very obvious during the era this film was made in.
shareNo kidding.
shareI think the extras union was whites only. Such films misrepresent American audiences of that time. I saw an independently made film from the early '50's that was set in a baseball game in Los Angeles. The audience shiwn in the film had plenty of African-Americans.
shareDoes this mean movies used to be "white washed" back in the day compared to later casting practices? Wow, thanks for the fresh and insightful observation, we had no idea.
