He was an Olympic athlete. I believe it was fencing.

He qualified for the United States fencing team prior to the 1936 Summer Olympic Games, but quit the team just prior to the games in order to take a role in the theatre that essentially led to his pursuit of acting as a career. Reminds me of a 1930's version of Jason Statham, who prior to acting was a British Commonwealth Games diver. 🐭
