Sebastian's Fall

Sorry if this has been brought up before but I find it unbelievable that Sebastian could fall from the trapeze like that and land on the sawdust with a thud and only mess up his arm and hand. He would have been killed or paralyzed IMO. Then he gets up and can walk away with help. Just too far fetched but what the heck I love this movie all the same.

It is a little far fetched.

If you watch the scene closely you can see that he actually fell on a mattress covered in sawdust. That's why he wasn't hurt.

reply

Was that a mistake in filming or was there supposed to be a mattress under the sawdust in the movie?. Even if that was the case he would still have broken his neck or back or killed himself. The fall was from too far up.

No mattress I'm sure (except for the stunt man who actually took the fall - it was probably a net). I suspect Anne Bauchens should have cut away a few frames earlier in the editing. I don't think the split-second glimpse of Sebastion hitting a less than rock-hard surface didn't bother DeMille, as his expectation would have been that most of the audience would have had its eyes closed in terror just before impact. DeMille once said (about the giant squid scene in "Reap the Wild Wind") -- People will pay admission to watch a horrific scene which, when it comes up, they'll close their eyes to avoid. He was right, I think, except, of course, in the case of die-hard cinemaphiles like us who faithfully patronize these boards.

I read it was a mattress and the stuntman fell from a short distance above it. You weren't supposed to notice the mattress of course but from the angle they shot the scene it was real obvious it was there. It was supposed to be that he just hit the ground of course and yes from the height he fell he should have hurt himself worse then shown.

People are impressive. There have been instances of someone jumping from a plane, having a total parachute malfunction, and living (I believe). Sure, someone in that situation would probably die, but some people might survive it. And someone in his position might have some idea of the best way to position himself when he fell.

What always struck me as strange is that no one from the circus had any clue as to the extent of Sebastian's ijuries and that even Braden did not know about Sebastian's crippled arm! Surely, the circus management, who were relying on his drawing power to keep the circus tour going, would have followed up on this.

reply

OK...kudos to everyone who spotted that; but aren't we all just a little
glad and relieved that he didn't actually hit the hard sawdust covered
floor and fatally injure or kill himself while doing that stunt?

Everything just CANNOT turn out that realistic for obvious reasons!

Unlike today's CGI technology, during the era this movie was made,
there was a greater risk and percentage of injury, because actors/
stunt people for the most part had to do it themselves to have a decent
level of believability.

He should have been dead. Then he comes back with a claw hand and not a bruise on him. Between that and them throwing a show together hours after the accident, I was like "Really"?

how about that bit he was going to another show Columbia?
He had a run of the tour contract he couldn't leave.

broken ribs, fractured spine , and one hell of a concussion- should have been the minimal result of that fall.

Thanks, doc.

Now you know why they could call him The Great Sebastian. He could fall on his back and only hurt his arm.

I agree that the odds are that Sebastian's fall would've in all likelihood been fatal or near fatal with permanent injuries. However he did have some things in his favor. He was in extremely good physical condition and being a trained flyer he probably tried to position his body upon impact where he could try to minimize his injuries.

It's also a fact that over the years, people have survived skydiving accidents where their chute didn't open and have made complete recoveries.

I've seen horrific looking crashes in motorcycle racing, so ugly I was sure the guy would be dead or crippled, yet he walked away with minimal injuries. Same in bicycle racing, where they're only wearing cloth shorts and a shirt. My brother once fell off of a high roof and landed on his shoulder and head, on concrete. After getting his wind back, he got up with some help and walked it off. He was back at work the next day, bruised and sprained but otherwise okay. Things like that are rare, but they happen.
