Grinning pilots?

Did anyone else find the grinning pilots during the air combat scenes a bit creepy? I know that acting was a bit different in the 50's and the actors had to make believe like they were in a dogfight rather than a soundstage, but as they looked around their cockpit it reminded me of the Brady Bunch (when everyone looks around their square at the others).

Petty observation on my part, but overall the movie was a nice collage of real combat footage and scenes on an actual carrier (even if there were numerous discrepancies between the planes and the same Japanese planes were shot down several times!).
