Judges Wife

Great film and great acting. Really enjoyed it. Can anyone explain why the judges wife and daughter were of importance to the story?

reply

Yep, I wondered about this too. I thought at first some sort of sub-plot might be emerging, but the judge seemed to carry on as normal after he'd had the bad news. I've an idea that when he got the message he did call an early adjournment, cutting the defence off just as he was getting going, so adding a little bit of tension.

I like these 1950s films set in London - iconic buildings, bombsites, recognisable character actors - but, as has already been remarked, the last 15 minutes were hard to swallow.

I think the film wanted to give a more rounded view of the justice system, rather than just show a judge presiding over the trial they wanted to have someone dealing with family pressures.

Its that man again!!

This sub-plot sticks out like a sore thumb. It's just total padding and bears absolutely no relationship to the rest of the story.🐭

reply

I think the idea was to increase tension at one point, by suggesting that his concerns for his wife might effect his competence over the trial.

reply

I think you're probably right, but it was a dud of a sub-plot.🐭
