Soldier trapped in the bomb crater...

Did he use a morphine surette to treat the pain from being wounded? (I'm trying to be coy about the ending.)

He gave himself something, remember when Calluchi finally took out the machine gun nest, by himself, and brought Small back in. He said "He was crocked to the gills". ----- ----- The main reason I posted this, was to let you know "Eight Iron Men" was finally released on DVD earlier this year. I just found out a few days ago. ----- The movie is being sold at Amazon.com, but I prefer to buy DVDs in local stores so I'll be checking out stores for it. ----- I hope the DVD has some great extras. ----- ----- Rusty

The Eight Iron Men dvd is one of those "manufactured on demand" discs (dvd-r). Are they ever sold in stores?

It seemed quite clear to me that whether wounded or not, he got wasted on morphine in order to deal with the situation he was in. In other words he became a drug user under the stress of combat.

This is something that seemed to be "self-censored" from war histories, memoirs and movies for many years. I only started to notice a few references to drug misuse in WW2 since about the year 2000.

An interesting point in an otherwise very forgettable movie. The other point of interest being the presence of Lee Marvin.

Morphine was the drug used for pain in WWII. But usually only the medics were allowed to use it. It was not given to to soldiers to give it to themselves.

Did he ever get to eat his piece of cake?

reply

Colluci grabbed it on the way out.

I loved that whole bit about the fruitcake!

Better to relieve the pain rather than squirm and moan giving away his position. I have seen movies where individual soldiers carried morphine, before D Day landing I believe the received them.
